Is there really a moral imperative to colonize mars as mentioned in the introduction? If it can be shown that colonizing mars increases overall wealth then certainly yes. Intuitively this is obvious. A single planet does not have the wealth of an entire solar system. Mars colonization is a step along the path going from one to the other.
How? All wealth is created by trade. All. Anything you find or create has value only because of the trade potential of people valuing it and that value is unique to the persons situation and changes over time. If everything were equally valuable trade would not happen as it does. Wealth would not be created.
Nothing has to be shipped from mars to earth for trade to happen. Going to mars, people will take possession of it. Mars real estate becomes a traded commodity. It would be an asset that people on earth could buy as an investment knowing that as more people go to mars it will naturally appreciate. Companies formed on mars can be publicly traded as well. This is really no different than the history of trade since the beginning.
Today the perception is that nothing of value exists on mars to be traded. That perception will change in time. Adding the value of mars to the earths economy raises the level for everyone. The time it takes depends on our efforts and how soon we go. Time is being wasted.
